Remembering Coach Doug

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Coach Doug Sleeman. Coach Doug passed away June 4th while celebrating his 50th birthday in Costa Rica. According to his Facebook page, Doug was riding a motorcycle that was hit by a semi tractor trailer. We are devastated by this awful news. Doug coached at Twisters for almost two decades. Throughout his time here, he had a positive impact on tens of thousands of children and families and became a great friend to hundreds of staff members and parents. Doug had an incredible energy and enthusiasm in the [...]

Twisters Statement Re: USOC & USAG

Dear Twister Families, As you may have heard, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has recently taken steps to revoke USA Gymnastics' (USAG) recognition as the national governing body for the sport of gymnastics. The USOC believes that "the challenges facing the organization are simply more than it is capable of overcoming in its current form," and at Twisters we agree and believe a fresh start is necessary. You may be wondering how the USOC's actions to decertify USAG will impact our gymnasts and coaches. We received a message from the USOC and USAG stating that these actions will have [...]

Abby Johnston Begins Scholarship Career as Nebraska Gymnast

It may not feel like it in Florida quite yet, but fall is underway. The kids are back to school, fall classes are rockin' and our 2018 seniors are off to college! American Twisters proudly sent two full-scholarship seniors to NCAA Division I Universities this year. Abby Johnston received a full scholarship to the University of Nebraska and Alexandra Greenwald received a full scholarship to the University of Iowa. Go Huskers and Hawkeyes! Even though our 2018 seniors are missed in the gym, their presence is certainly felt, and the pride and inspiration they've left with us will stay forever. As [...]

A Gymnast’s Back-to-School Balancing Act

The start of a new school year is a particularly difficult time for many gymnasts, especially as they get older. They are required to do the intense gymnastics training they did all summer long while balancing the additional demands and challenges of new teachers and a full schedule of academic classes. Their teachers emphasize how seriously they need to take their performance in each of their classes and how they will be expected to produce high quality work that will be incrementally more difficult than it was in their prior grade. Most gymnasts are perfectionistic and hardworking, so they [...]

Twister of the Month – April – Alexandra Greenwald

The recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland hit way too close to home for Twisters. Many of our students, including our Team girls, currently attend MSD and knew the victims. One of our Level 10 Team gymnasts, Alexandra Greenwald, lost one of her closest friends, Nicholas Dworet, in the shooting. Nick’s brother, Alex, was also shot and survived. Though facing heartbreak no high school senior should have to endure, Alexandra turned her grief into action and organized a meal train for Nick’s family to help support them in their darkest hour. In addition, she has dedicated [...]

Twister of the Month – Coach Joanna Davis!

Each month, Twisters recognizes one outstanding member of our Twisters family, whether it's a gymnast, coach or staff member, who is doing great things both inside and outside of the gym. This month we are proud to highlight one of our amazing coaches, Joanna Davis, who not only shares her passion and expertise for gymnastics in the gym day in and day out, but she also shares her valuable time serving the homeless on a weekly basis through an organization called "The Soup Kitchen." Joanna is a role model not only for how she positively impacts her students, but also [...]

Twisters Stands with Survivors

Dear Twister Members: Twister Gymnastics stands with the army of sister survivors who rightfully demand immediate change in the secretive, abusive, and unethical culture of USA Gymnastics that enabled the sexual abuse of 150+ athletes at the hands of Dr. Larry Nassar. For far too long USA Gymnastics, the governing body of our sport, their board of directors and the national staff have turned a blind eye to abuse and instilled a culture of fear in our country’s most talented athletes. The culture of USA Gymnastics must change, and this change requires a complete overhaul of the board. We too [...]

American Twisters Helps Local Children Through Angel Tree Program

Twisters has partnered with the Angel Tree Program this year to provide holiday gifts to children in need. The gift drive will start the first week in November and go until December 9th.  Any parent that would like to participate can stop by Twisters and pick up an Angel Card and select gift(s) for the girl or boy they wish to sponsor. "The Angel Tree program brightens the lives of thousands of children each year who otherwise would have no gifts to open during the holidays.  Angel Tree is a volunteer-driven program – with people from all over Broward County donating toys, [...]
