Summer is over and we’re all leaping and bounding into our fall routines, freshly inspired by watching so many incredible athletes live out their dreams at the Paris Olympics. Here in the gymnastics industry, we love watching so many young kids catch that sparkle of inspiration from watching incredible gymnasts like Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles and Hezly Rivera, and realizing that they too can begin on the path towards Olympic greatness.

We always see a wave of new faces in the gym around this time of year, and so many who are new to gymnastics have the same question: What to wear to gymnastics class? For many young children, the first day of gymnastics class can be a mix of excitement and nerves. It’s a new experience, a new environment, and a chance to try something new. Helping your child prepare mentally and physically can make the transition smoother.

What to Wear to Gymnastics Class

The right clothing can make a big difference in your child’s comfort and ability to move freely. Here’s a breakdown for what preschool and grade school kids should wear to gymnastics class:

Preschoolers:

  • Comfortable outfit or Leotard: A comfortable t-shirt and shorts or tank top and leggings are great, and a well-fitting leotard works well, too.
  • Hair: Tie longer hair away from the face with a ponytail, braid or bun.
  • Footwear: Bare feet are usually best, but soft, non-slip socks can be worn if needed.

Grade Schoolers:

  • Leotard or comfortable outfit: As your child progresses, a leotard can become more beneficial. However, comfortable athletic wear is also acceptable.
  • Hair: Tie hair tightly away from the face to prevent it from getting in the way.

Footwear: Bare feet are generally preferred.

Mentally Preparing for Gymnastics Class

  • Talk about it: Discuss what gymnastics is and what your child can expect. This can help alleviate any fears they might have and increase their confidence when they walk through those gym doors.
  • Positive mindset: Encourage a positive attitude. Remind them that everyone starts as a beginner. Take the class one step, or leap at a time, and remind them that they can do challenging things!

Remind them to have fun: Everyone is there to learn and improve, but the most important factor is that they find joy in their experience. The best thing to wear to gymnastics class is a big smile.

General Tips/ What to Avoid:

  • Comfort is key: Choose form-fitting clothing that allows for a full range of motion.
  • Avoid loose clothing: Clothing that is too loose can get caught in equipment or expose more than what’s comfortable.
  • Avoid wearing: bulky zippers, large hair clips or accessories or dangly jewelry.
  • Check with the gym: Some gyms have specific dress code requirements.

Ok so you’ve got the What to Wear and the What to Avoid… now let’s talk about how to prepare for gymnastics class on day one – and any other day – with a solid pre-class routine:

Pre-Class Routine

  • Healthy snack: A light snack can provide energy for jumps & tumbles without making your child feel sluggish. Suggestions include fruit, yogurt, a granola bar, trail mix, hummus & crackers or veggies and dip.
  • Hydration: Ensure your child drinks plenty of water before and after class. Hydration is key for energy and cognitive function.
  • Use the restroom: A full bladder can be distracting. Use the restroom right before class starts to avoid discomfort or disruption.

Heads up, coach: For safety’s sake, please let your coach know of any limitations, restrictions, injuries or concerns prior to the start of your class.
